Isn't the Island beautiful?
It is a dream place for me to have a vacation there at a future date. However, I feel so bad and upset when
I read a post somewhere few days ago. You what to know the reason that make me feel so upset?
This is because, besides the beautiful beaches and sands in Maldives, there is also an isle of trash!
People produce so many rubbish day by day and hence produce an island of trash - Thilafushi Island.
Rubbish island: Smoke billows from Thilafushi Island, not far from the densely populated capital of the Maldives, Male. The island is where all the trash discarded by Maldivians and tourists ends up. |
Refuse from the residents of Male is ferried to nearby Thilafushi Island where the island nation’s sole dumpsite is located. |
A resident of Male tending to her plants in an apartment overlooking a local dump where trash is collected from the city and later moved to nearby Thilafushi Island. |
The local government showing a figure that visitors to the Maldives created on average 7.2kg of waste per day while the residents of Male created 2.8kg of rubbish each day. Try to imagine, there are thousands visitors that travel to Maldives everyday and each of them create 7kg of trash each day. This will make up a lot of rubbish just in the short time.
If the local government, local residents and the tourists are continued to produce the trash in this trend. After a few ten years later, there might be no beautiful beaches and sands in Maldives anymore but just an island with full of rubbish.
Thus, all people should responsible in this issue and try the best to not produce so much trash through 3R activities which are reuse, reduce and recycle!
